Chemical Bund Refurbishment & Protective Coating
This project was completed within the chemical storage and containment area, where a newly constructed concrete bund required a specialist protective lining system. The bund was designed to provide secondary containment for chemical storage, making long-term durability, chemical resistance and environmental protection essential requirements. The completed system delivers a seamless, chemically resistant barrier capable of protecting the concrete substrate while providing a safe, low maintenance surface suitable for demanding industrial environments.
Project Overview
Industrial Resin Flooring was appointed to install a high-performance epoxy resin coating system on the newly constructed chemical containment bund.
The project required a robust lining capable of protecting the concrete from chemical attack while creating a seamless finish across the bund floor, perimeter walls and raised plinths.
Following consultation with the client, the originally specified Flowcrete SF41 CR system was replaced with an approved Resbuild SF coating due to product availability. The revised specification maintained the required levels of chemical resistance, durability and long-term performance.
What Did We Do?
The installation began with full mechanical preparation of every concrete surface to ensure optimum adhesion and maximise the long-term performance of the coating system.
Works Included:
- Mechanical preparation using vacuum-assisted diamond grinding equipment
- Preparation of vertical surfaces using vacuum-assisted wall sanders
- Removal of laitance, contaminants and weak concrete
- Controlled dust extraction throughout the preparation process
- Repair of blowholes and surface imperfections using epoxy grout mortar
- Roller application of Flowcrete Hydraseal DPM primer
- Application of two coats of Resbuild SF epoxy coating
- Broadcast of White Aluminium Oxide aggregate to achieve the specified slip-resistant finish
System Specification and Products
To provide the required levels of chemical protection, adhesion and slip resistance, a specialist epoxy resin coating system was installed throughout the containment area.
Concrete Surface Preparation
All concrete surfaces were mechanically prepared using vacuum-assisted diamond grinding equipment. This process removed laitance and surface contamination while creating the correct surface profile to ensure maximum adhesion of the resin system.
Flowcrete Hydraseal DPM
One roller-applied coat of Flowcrete Hydraseal DPM was installed across all prepared concrete surfaces and allowed to cure in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification before the application of subsequent coatings.
Resbuild SF Epoxy Coating
Two coats of Resbuild SF epoxy coating were roller-applied to the bund floor, perimeter walls and raised concrete plinths to create a seamless, chemically resistant protective lining.
Slip-Resistant Finish
White Aluminium Oxide aggregate was broadcast into the second coat while wet to produce a durable anti-slip finish suitable for industrial environments.
Outcome
The completed refurbishment provided M&I Materials with a durable, seamless chemical containment system capable of protecting the concrete structure while improving the overall appearance and functionality of the bund.
The specialist epoxy lining delivers excellent chemical resistance, improved cleanability and long-term protection, ensuring the containment area is well suited to the demands of a busy industrial facility.
